REVIEW: MAC RETRO MATTE LIPSTICK IN FLAT OUT FABULOUS

23102013

Matte lipsticks… I can’t get enough of them. They are by far one of my favorite lip products out there, and I’ve had nothing but good results with the ones I have from MAC.

I’ve actually heard that Ruby Woo, which is my all time favorite matte red lipstick, lies at the core of the Retro Matte Collection. So naturally, when I saw the new Retro Matte lipsticks in store, I had to grab one. And low and behold, I went for the bright fuchsia one. Typical.

Flat Out Fabulous is described as a “bright plum matte”. It’s a cool-toned plummy fuchsia shade with a very matte finish.

THE VERDICT

This is a gorgeous shade suitable to wear in every season. At first sight I thought it looked a bit like one of my favorite bright lipsticks, Girl About Town, but this one’s definitely more plum and darker. This shade in particular can look more fuchsia in some light, and more purple in others. Can’t complain about that, now can I?! I can imagine this shade looking amazing on darker skin tones, too. Compared to other matte lipsticks I own, Flat Out Fabulous is far more pleasant to apply and to wear. It’s still somewhat dry, but goes on smoother than others as it warms up when applied to the lips. It has a very opaque color pay-off – one swipe ought to do the job – and the lasting power is as you would expect from a matte shade. It lasts up to 6-7 hours, after which it started fading and and left me with still a pretty rich stain. Keep in mind that matte lipsticks always have a drier formula than other formulas, so this can still dry out your lips a bit. Be sure to hydrate your lips beforehand to prevent cracking – even though I’ve never had that problem myself.

I prefer the formula of this lipstick to all the other matte ones I have. This one is applies and feels less dry, yet has that gorgeous flat, matte finish that I’ve come to adore. I honestly can say no bad things about this lipsticks – I absolutely love it! The shade, the formula, the lasting power… All top notch to me!
